'Marble Bear Fetish with Turquoise Inlay Eyes

Fetishes, or stone carvings representing animals, are common worldwide. Zuni Pueblo has a long tradition of carving fetishes for religious purposes, as well as to serve as talismans to bring good hunting, crops, or other needs. Fetishes are still very much in use by Zuni people today. The Zuni often create fetishes based on the six cardinal directions represented by fetishes of different animals of prey. The Mountain Lion for North; the Badger for South; the Bear for West; the Wolf is for East; the Eagle for the “upper Region”; and the Mole for the “lower Region”. Each animal holds a distinct power, and personality attribute and would be used according to the particular goal being sought."
